Rooball (5-9yr olds)

Rooball at Melville City FC

The FFA has developed a modified game of football (soccer) for children 5-10 years old called Rooball. That is, a smaller version of football on smaller fields with less players, fewer rules and modified equipment. As a result, there are more goals and a lot more fun. The aim of Rooball is to give young girls and boys the maximum opportunity to participate in football, the world's most popular sport. Rooball is kids football, as long as you are 5 years old you can start football now.

Rooball is a Football West endorsed Small Sided Football program. You will find all you need to know about Small Sided Football on www.smallsidedfootball.com.au.

Small Sided Football is a modified form of 11-a-side football, designed to meet the needs of players from under 5 to 11s. Our Rooballers (5 - 9 yrs) play an intra-club competition at Len Shearer Reserve on Saturdays. Our 10's and 11's play an inter-club competition on Sundays (involving travelling to other clubs). The philosophy of Small Sided Football focuses on enjoyment. The game is the main teacher. We want our kids to have fun and to build the football skills that will allow them to play this great game for as long as they wish.

Melville City has players from 4 to 64 playing at our club. There is a place for every level of competition from the very top of the league to social players.

What can Rooball give to children?

Rooball helps develop active children, as it lets them exercise in a fun and safe environment. There is little chance of injury in Rooball as players must wear shin pads to protect themselves and referees ensure fair play. Rooball is about young girls and boys playing together, making friends, having fun and learning the benefits of team participation and team sport. It's the way football is meant to be played... just for fun!

What can Rooball offer parents?

Rooball games are played between local teams so there is less travel and less expense. All we really ask of parents is your support and positive encouragement of the Rooball spirit; that is an emphasis on fun and participation rather than on winning! However, parents can of course, become involved as referees, coaches or managers of Rooball teams. There is no obligation towards parents as Rooball clubs are set up and ready to roll. If you want to be involved in your children's sporting activities, there is always a place for parents on a Rooball team.

Structure of the Rooball Competition

Every Saturday morning from May to September between 9am and noon, Len Shearer Reserve in Booragoon is abuzz with over 250 young players along with their parents, preparing for then playing scheduled Rooball matches.

What's Provided

Each registered Rooball player will be allocated to a team for the season. As part of the registration fee, each player is provided with a full uniform (shirt and shorts) for them to keep. Players must provide their own boots and shin pads. A boot bin recycling program is available if you might be looking for a pair of good quality second hand boots.

Help Needed

Our club relies on parent-helpers. Everyone involved in the club is a volunteer. We need parent-coaches, managers, bbq and canteen helpers. Please put your hand up to help. It's fun and your kids will be impressed. The rules of Small Sided Games are not complicated so even if you have never been involved in football before, you can still be involved.

Our parent coaches are there to make the football experience of every player and their families in their team as enjoyable as possible. Having good personal and organisational skills are most important for parent coaches the aim is allow them to learn through playing the game with minimal instruction. Our club provides opportunities for our parent coaches to learn and to build their coaching skills.
